What is Reiki?
In brief, Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an ancient complementary therapy originating from Japan. There is a universal life energy that flows through all living things, known as “ki” in Japan, “qi” or “chi” in China as in Tai Chi, or “prana” in India’s ayurvedic medicine. “Rei” means universal.
When this universal energy flows freely this enhances the body’s natural ability to heal itself and we feel balanced with a sense of well-being. Inevitably from time to time, blockages in this flow of energy arise. During a treatment, blockages are eased as healing energy flows into the recipient enhancing the body’s natural ability to heal itself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
Reiki most noticeably promotes a deep sense of rest and relaxation. It’s a fabulous antidote to our hectic, often stressful, lifestyles. Furthermore, it can help us think more clearly, calmly and positively. It balances our physical bodies and promotes spiritual and emotional well-being.
How long does a Reiki session last?
A Reiki session generally lasts between about 30 minutes to an hour. I like to offer 30-minute treatments, however, your appointment will be for an hour in total allowing for an initial consultation plus time to relax afterwards.
What should I do before and after Reiki?
Please avoid alcohol, caffeine and heavy meals before and after the treatment. Also drink plenty of water, especially afterwards. This helps flush away any toxins that might have been released during the treatment.
After your session, I always invite people to sit and chat about their experience, if they wish, while sipping a glass of water.
It is always recommended that you take it easy after Reiki. I recommend rest and meditation. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for the rest of the day.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing, you’ll only need to take off your shoes.
What to expect during a treatment?
For your treatment, you’ll usually be asked to remove your shoes and lie on your back on a couch. You’ll usually be offered a blanket. I always offer a bolster cushion to place under your knees should you wish to use it. Many people find this more comfortable and it is better for your back.
The practitioner will then place their hands either on and/or just above different parts of the body. In the Western branch of Reiki this usually includes the seven chakras (energy centres situated at the crown, forehead, throat, heart, solar plexus, sacral, and the root chakra at the base of your spine). The beauty of Reiki, however, is that the healing energy will flow to wherever it is needed most for your greater good.
While each individual’s experience is unique, you are likely to feel a sense of deep relaxation. During the treatment, you may feel warmth, cooling, tingling, or no noticeable physical feeling at all.
Everyone I have treated reports feeling relaxed and calm, some quite profoundly so, both during and after a treatment.
Does Reiki have any side effects?
Reiki is considered very safe. While the vast majority of people feel deeply relaxed after receiving Reiki, occasionally someone may feel worse before feeling better as the body is healing. This may include feeling tired, having a headache, or stomachache.
Can anyone receive Reiki?
Yes, Reiki is for everyone. There are no contraindications, that is to say, there are no conditions, illnesses and so on that exclude anyone from receiving Reiki. Anyone under the age of 16 should be accompanied by their parent or guardian.
Can you receive Reiki at home?
Many reiki practitioners offer home visits. I have a portable and very comfortable reclining chair that I can bring to you for Reiki home visits in Pagham, Lagness, Bognor Regis, Bersted, and Felpham or further afield on request.
What is Distance Reiki?
While it’s wonderful to treat people in person, sometimes that is not possible. When I first heard about Distance Reiki, I was sceptical so much so that for a long time I didn’t even try it. Then I met other Reiki Masters who swore by it. I gave it a try and loved it. All my distance Reiki clients to date say that they have found our sessions very beneficial with reported benefits ranging from reduced anxiety to releasing emotional blockages. You can read more about Distance Reiki here.
I can’t explain how it works but I believe that we are all connected and it is possible to send healing Reiki energy to one another no matter where we are in the world.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
Although research into the benefits of Reiki is limited, studies have found that Reiki may reduce stress and anxiety, lower heart rate and blood pressure, ease pain, boost your immune and improve the quality of your life and feelings of self-esteem.
Further studies are needed to enable the medical and scientific community to gain a deeper understanding of the varied benefits of Reiki.
In my personal experience, my clients have told me that Reiki has helped them with anxiety, long-term pain management, insomnia, a feeling of physical, mental and spiritual well-being and more.
“Kathryn is a really lovely Reiki healer. I always feel so much better when I’ve seen her, and she is very wise! She’s helped with some long term pain issues and also helped me deepen my own practice as a Reiki master myself. She’s a very talented lady!” Beccy Holdeman, Google Review
